Passing Fancies ~ July 2023

Reading: I just re-read Megan Abbott’s Dare Me and was it was even better than I remembered it to be.

Video: The latest season of Black Mirror. The documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.

Audio: Sinéad O’Connor. It’s hard to explain, even now, how her first album felt and sounded to some of us young weird female listeners when it was released. For me, it’s never lost its power. May she rest in peace.

(Tr)eats: Cherry tomato salad with lots of fresh basil, over and over. Cold noodle dishes from the Vietnamese place near work.

Drinks: Agua fresca made from watermelon and honey and a few mint leaves. Perfect in summer.

Beauty Products: Tree Hut Watermelon Shea Whipped Body Butter. (See above.)

Garb: A purple resin skull pendant that I received as a birthday gift. Paired with a black cotton dress, it allows me to feel a little bit goth even in the hottest, least goth-friendly weather.

Pleasures: Old friends who have listened to me vent on a certain topic lately. New friends who have spent time with me chatting over a drink or coffee. Air-conditioning.

Plans: Update my scent-mail list. Avoid heat exhaustion over the next few days! See a movie or two in the theaters.

  1. All the Beauty and the Bloodshed was one of my favorite films I watched this year! There was something so refreshing about a documentary sharing an artist’s story both personally and politically through their work, in their own words, with their stamp of approval and agency in the narrative. It spurred on a deep dive into Nan Goldin’s work for me, which has been so rewarding.

I found the narrative so refreshing, particularly how much agency Nan and her work had in how they shared both her political and personal story.
