Passing Fancies ~ June 2024

Reading:  Susan Seidelman’s new memoir, Desperately Seeking Something.

Art: Sonia Delaunay: Living Art at the Bard Graduate Center.

Audio: The Beatles, for work but also for pleasure, plus other assorted British Invasion artists.

Video: Just watched Scarlet Street (Fritz Lang, 1945), streamed through our Metrograph membership account. I think it’s going to be a noir summer.

(Tr)eats: I recently had malabi (rosewater milk pudding) for the first time and I want more. And I’m halfway through a bag of cat-shaped licorice candy that my friend T. brought back from Germany.

Drink: I’m in the mood for white wine again. It happens every summer.

Garb: We just got through a heat wave and I’ve been wearing nothing but cotton shirt-dresses and mary janes…accessorized with a new paper hand-fan or two from Pearl River Mart. It’s only the end of June and I already miss my cool-weather clothes.

Beauty products: Crown Affair hair products (I bought a trial-size set). Malin + Goetz Lip Moisturizer, the only thing that helps when I have severe chapping issues. Korres Sea Salt shower gel.

Pleasures: Birthday week adventures in all possible media, with some of the most special people. Plus, meeting two very cool “internet friends” IRL for the first time!

Plans: Local festivities with friends for the 4th. Another visit to Philadelphia.

  1. I’ll have to try that Malin + Goetz – Evan Healy whipped shea butter lip balm is the only thing I’ve found that works for Colorado dry weather.

Wearing: Grandiflora Saskia – a cool, humid, and photo-flowery scent which has a naturally sweet finish several hours later, like a few drops of nectar fell onto my skin.

Watching: Tour de France, one of the very, very few sports that I am interested in.

Drinking: A Kir at happy hour, water “cocktails” the rest of the time (La Croix, grenadine, ice, frozen fruit).

    • I don’t know why I sometimes get really dry, itchy lip issues in the summer rather than winter — air-conditioning? In any case, M + G and CO Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm are my two remedies!

I remember sniffing that Saskia perfume at Christophe Laudamiel’s short-lived storefront in Manhattan. It’s really beautiful.

I like Kirs, too! and I’m more into “mocktails” than ever before, especially now that more and more places seem to be offering them on the menu!

  2. I miss my cool-weather clothes too! Malabi sounds right up my alley. I recently tried rose macarons for the first time and they were a delight, though the pure rose flavor seemed a bit artificial (not saying it was).

      • They taste… rosy! I used to eat them occasionally when I was younger, before I knew that bouquet flowers are full of pesticides, etc. Not as good as they smell. Once I was at a restaurant where they had pickled rose petals as part of a dish and they somehow managed to preserve the flavor really well.
