Passing Fancies ~ July 2024

Reading:  Just started Bear by Julia Phillips.

Art: Mary Cassatt at Work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Audio: I’ve watched Céline Dion’s Olympics ceremony performance more than once or twice, and I’m not even a Céline Dion Fan.

Video: Your Honor on Netflix. It’s not very good, honestly, but I love Bryan Cranston and the New Orleans setting, so.

(Tr)eats: I want ice cream every day (although I don’t actually indulge that craving) and just learned that the pistachio at Davey’s is just the way I like it.

Drink: Seltzer water mixed with with strawberry shrub from the farmers market. San Pellegrino flavored seltzers in cans.

Garb: Jelly fisherman sandals are back (again). I found my black DKNY pair from the 1990s (yes) in the back of the closet and I’ve brought them back into circulation.

Beauty products: La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Hydra Hydrating Face Sunscreen SPF 50 (finally jumping on the LRP bandwagon). Jones Road Miracle Balm in Pinched Cheeks (a complimentary “mini” pot). Hard-water shampoo and conditioner by a brand called Malibu C, because the water in our city is really rough lately.

Pleasures: A very nostalgic trip to Philadelphia. My first pedicure in over a year. Hiroshige scent tours at work. Relief from the mind-melting heat wave(s).

Plans: Keep up with physical therapy (shoulder issues), visit a friend in Williamsburg, take another tarot class. And work on two new talks for the autumn!

  1. Hello Jessica,
    Love your blog🌹

Can you recommend any online tarot classes for newbies from an ocean of offerings?

All the best on shoulder care 🙌🏼.

    • Hello, Gale! Thank you! 🙂

I’ve taken a couple of classes already (both in-person and online) with Laetitia Barbier and can not speak highly enough of her. She is smart, sensitive, and incredibly knowledgeable (and not at all condescending to beginners like me!). https://www.laetitiacartomancy.com/

If you live in NYC, the Brooklyn Brainery sometimes offers tarot classes. I love the Brainery’s atmosphere for learning. https://brooklynbrainery.com/

And I also check the Biddy Tarot site regularly for helpful information. 🙂

  2. Mmm strawberry shrub with sparkling water? Yes, please! And jellys are back? Wish I still had my red sparkling pair from the 80s.

Wearing: Clarins L’Eau Ressourcant. Refreshing and light in this 90+ heat. Also, Scents of Wood Sequoia in Rye when the slightest dip in temps appears in an effort to bring on fall weather. I am over the heat.

Planning: A trip to San Francisco in October.

Watching: RattleCam, live footage of a “secret” rattlesnake den somewhere near-ish to me in Northern Colorado. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. I don’t know why I’m so fascinated, but I am. From afar, that is.

Pleasures: Reading in a cool bedroom before bed. A new Tatine candle – Forest Floor. A cat curling up against me in the middle of the night. Sitting on the balcony at 4:30 am, drinking coffee and listening to the birds waking up.

    • My very first jellies (when I was a child) were red!! I loved them so. This is my third time wearing this particular trend, I guess… I see them on the cool kids in Brooklyn so I emboldened myself to bring out the pair I kept from the 90s!!

Ah, that candle sounds nice. and yes, yes, to reading in cool sheets in a cool room just before sleep! So luxurious.
