Passing Fancies ~ September 2024

Autumn greetings!

Reading:  Every night for the past week or so, I’ve been curled up with Dustin Pittman’s New York After Dark and Mark Bozek’s The Battle of Versailles: The Fashion Showdown of 1973 (photos by Bill Cunningham) — just living in the past, I guess! I attended launch events for both books.

Audio: The news, more than I have in a long time…to keep up on presidential election updates and the latest NYC mayoral scandal.

Video: It’s time to re-watch some of my favorite movies starring Maggie Smith. She really was one of a kind.

(Tr)eats: Local apples and apple cider doughnuts from the farmers market, to welcome the autumn.

Drink: San Pellegrino blood orange soda, as a farewell to summer.

Garb: Is it tights season yet? I’m looking forward to layering. I have a new denim jacket and a new black lace long-sleeved top…things like that, to wear over/under my usual dresses.

Beauty products: I’m recently on a drugstore body lotion kick. The scents of the classic Jergens formula (cherry-almond!) and Johnson’s pink baby lotion (powdery rose!) can’t be beat, imho.

Pleasures: Attending book launches/signings and scent-related events and running into friends there. Making good progress at physical therapy (generic rotator-cuff issues).

Plans: Buckle down to finish work on my two upcoming talks plus some small side projects, while trying not to miss out on these best weeks of the fall season!

What are you currently reading, wearing, sniffing?

  1. It’s definitely not yet layering season yet here in Colorado. I’m wearing my Alex Mill work jackets in the morning and removing them by mid-day because it’s so hot. Reading Masterpieces of the Perfume Industry by Christine Mayer Lefkowith and salivating over the bottle designs. Also A Crack in the Edge of the World by Simon Winchester to satisfy some knowledge cravings for geology, history, and San Francisco. Spritzing Bo by Liis and Scents of Wood Sequoia in Rye, heat be damned. I’m over summer scents, it’s full on autumn scents for me right now! Just emptied my sample of Scout Dixon West Incarnate – delightful and very much my vibe.

      • I love them! I have one work jacket in red, one in green. Not too heavy, lots of deep pockets, able to dress up or down.

  2. Reading (finally) The Mirror and the Light, Hilary Mantel’s third book in her Cromwell Trilogy. Watching: was able to see the film of National Theatre’s play Prima Facie, with Jodie Comer — OMG, it was stunning. See it if you can! Sniffing: many samples from discovery kits I bought while in London recently doing a little “perfume tourism”, plus the Brocard fragrances I bought at Bloom Perfumery: Color Feeling Yellow, and Color Feeling Purple. Doing: LOTS of gardening, to replant an area that had new masonry installed this summer and to take advantage of cool fall planting weather (best time to plant in the South). Wearing: grungy garden clothes!

    • I still haven’t read that third volume, either! eek. We do have a copy in the house.

London is a GREAT city for perfume tourism!! I’m still enjoying the things I bought there months ago. I need to look into Brocard…not familiar with this name!
