Passing Fancies ~ August 2025

Reading: Miss Caroline Bingley, Private Investigator by Kelly Gardiner and Sharmini Kumar. A diverting little who-done-it for summer.

Art: In keeping with that theme, A Lively Mind: Jane Austen at 250 at the Morgan Library. Letters in Miss Austen’s hand! her very own turquoise ring! and lots of first editions!

Video: Finally got around to watching The Super Models (on Apple TV). So many great imagery, so much good footage between the interviews with Linda, Christy, Cindy, and Naomi.

Drinks: Twinings Earl Grey tea, the imported English version. It reminds me of the hotel where we stayed in London.

(Tr)eats: I had an Orange Pistachio Olive Oil Tea Cake at a Maman bakery and now I have to look the other way when I pass any of their shops so I’m not constantly eating these things.

Beauty Products: Flyte.70 S&S Lip Sheer in Tempted. Anna Sui loose facial powder in a lavender shade (a little goes a long way and doesn’t actually look lavender on skin).

Fragrances: A beautiful sample set that Ormonde Jayne sent me as a press gift. I’ve appreciated this brand for a long time but still haven’t tried everything in their collection.

Garb: A black summer maxi-dress from some random site called Lovestitch…over and over and over. Once in a blue moon, the algorithm gives me an ad for something that I actually can use.

Pleasures: This month had its share of disappointments and sticky moments. But I led my first freelance gallery tour at MoMA, and gave a talk at the Brooklyn Brainery, and did a lot of writing, all of which helped lift my spirits.

Up Next: Holiday weekends, especially the one called Labor Day, are pretty meaningless when you’re not working. No travel plans, obvs. More tours, more job-hunting, more eBaying. Hit up a few book events during Fashion Week.

What have you been up to lately?

  1. Let’s break down the phrase, “orange pistachio olive oil tea cake”. Orange: healthy, warding off scurvy, no less. Pistachio: protein and antioxidants. Olive oil: of course, no need to elaborate on the benefits of that ingredient. Tea: also antioxidants, plus anecdotal accounts of the mental soothing of tea drinking, compared to coffee. Cake: okay, if one is going to be super fussy, maybe not heart healthy, but cake nourishes the souls of tenderhearted persons who must brave all the cruel, cake-less parts of daily living. Final analysis: I declare orange pistachio olive oil tea cake, the ultimate super food.

Side note: I get what you mean about the lavender powder. I have become enamored with this pink powder from Silk Naturals (a shade called chiffon), some of it and tinted Japanese SPF lip balm have become my entire makeup in this heat.

Anyway, best wishes on the job hunt.

    • I love your interpretation of this menu item’s benefits! I’ll keep this in mind next time I’m passing a Maman location… 😉

I love Silk Naturals! I’ve bought several of their lip colors, those sheer gloss sticks they have. So good.
